The Way @ St James Church

The Way” stars Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez and James Nesbitt. The film follows the exploits of an American named Tom (Martin Sheen) who travels to France to reclaim the remains of his son (Emilio Estevez) who died whilst walking the first leg of the pilgrimage known as the Camino de Santiago. However, instead of returning home, he decides to try and better understand his son, by walking the Camino, carrying his son’s ashes on the way.

As he walks, he meets various other characters including a food and marijuana loving Dutchman, an American lady with a sorrowful secret and a rather talkative Irishman (James Nesbitt). Tom rather reluctantly finds himself the leader of this small band of pilgrims, all of whom are walking the Camino seeking greater meaning to their lives.

The evening group explores the exploits of this band of pilgrims, their motivations and their physical and spiritual journeys. We will discuss big questions about salvation, and what is meant by that, in an informal and accessible way.

On 6th June we will simply sit and watch the film together. On the subsequent five Tuesday we will discuss short extracts from the film in the light of scripture coupled with our own views and insights. The use of scripture is ‘light-touch’ and no prior biblical knowledge is required!

We will also sample food and wine peculiar to the areas of northern Spain through which the Camino passes.
